Hassan district is situated at southeren part of the state comprising of 8 blocks. The entire district comes under 4 Agro climatic zones namely, Central dry zone, Southern dry zone, Southern transitional zone & Hilly zone. Arasikere Taluk comes under Central dry zone, Channarayapatna Taluk comes under Southern dry zone, Holenarsipur, Arkalgud, Alur and Belur comes under Southern transitional zone where as Sakleshpur Taluk comes under Hilly zone.
The Department is implementing Watershed Development Programmes on Watershed basis since 2000-2001 through Gram Panchayath with peoples and NGOs participation i.e. through Watershed Sanghas ( Grampanchayaths Executive committies) The very objectives of the Programmes implementing in the department are:
- To conserve the natural resources like soil and water by increasing the plant population.
- To increase the underground water table
- To increase the Crop production by development of cultivable land
- To convert the non cultivable land into cultivable land through soil and water conservation measures.
- To create rural employment through income generating activities and subsidiary occupations
All the above objectives which increases the percapita income of the rural people and Rural landless in the watershed area.
At present different programmes like IWMP & SUJALA -II,are being implemented in the district. All the 3 sectors in the department i.e. Agriculture sector, Horticulture sector & Forest Sector are involed in implementation of the above said programmes.
Programme is under implementation through 104 Micro Watershed catchments in all the 8 blocks. of Hassan district. During 2013-14, 19581 ha. of land is expected to be developed developed with the budgetary amount of Rs. 2533.78 lakhs.
Programme is being implemented through 68 Micro Watershed catchments in all the 8 Blocks of the district. During 2013-14 10072 ha. of land is expected be developed with the budgetary amount of Rs. 1208.627 lakhs.
